Design the Best Performance Review Checklist for Your Business

Performance reviews are a crucial part of any organization's success. They help employees understand their strengths and weaknesses, set goals for improvement, and receive feedback from their managers. However, conducting effective performance reviews can be challenging, especially if you don't have a clear and consistent process.

The right checklist template is essential. With Workflow, create your own template or select one approved by industry leaders, like the Vacation Request Workflow, and the Employee Expense Workflow

Why do you need to create a performance review checklist?

That's why we created Workflow, a checklist app that helps you streamline your performance review process and provide better feedback to your team. Workflow lets you create custom checklists for different types of performance reviews, such as annual, quarterly, or project-based. You can also assign tasks to yourself or others, track progress, and share feedback in real time.

In this article, I'll show you how to use Workflow to create performance review checklists and provide feedback to your employees. By following these steps, you'll be able to:

  • Save time and avoid confusion by standardizing your performance review process

  • Ensure that you cover all the important aspects of performance evaluation

  • Provide constructive and actionable feedback to your team

  • Improve employee engagement and satisfaction

How to create a powerful performance review checklist

Step 1. Create a checklist in Workflow.

The first step is to create a new checklist in Workflow for your performance review.

You'll see a blank checklist template where you can add a title, description, and tasks. For the title, you can use something like "Performance Review Checklist for [Employee Name]". For the description, you can briefly explain the purpose and scope of the review. For example:

"This checklist is for conducting an annual performance review for [Employee Name]. It covers the following areas:

  • Goal achievement

  • Skills and competencies

  • Strengths and areas for improvement

  • Feedback and recognition

  • Development plan

Step 2. Add tasks to your checklist

The next step is to add tasks to your checklist that correspond to the different aspects of performance evaluation. You can use these tasks as a guide for your review conversation and as a way to document your feedback.

To add a task, tap on the "+" icon at the bottom of the checklist template. You'll see a screen where you can enter the task name, assignee, due date, priority, and notes. For example:

Task name: Review goal achievement
Assignee: Me
Due date: Today
Priority: High
Notes: Compare employee's performance against SMART goals set at the beginning of the year

You can add as many tasks as you need for your performance review checklist. Some examples of tasks are:

  • Review skills and competencies

  • Identify strengths and areas for improvement

  • Provide feedback and recognition

  • Discuss development plan and career aspirations

  • Agree on action items and next steps

Step 3. Share your checklist

Once you've created your checklist, you can share it with your employee so that they can prepare for the review and see your feedback. To share your checklist, tap on the "Share" icon at the top right corner of the screen. Then, choose "Share with User" from the menu.

You'll see a screen where you can enter the email address of your employee and add a message. For example:

"Hi [Employee Name],

I've created a checklist for our upcoming performance review. Please take a look at it and let me know if you have any questions or comments.

I'm looking forward to our conversation and hearing about your achievements and challenges this year.

Best,

[Your Name]"

Your employee will receive an email invitation to join Workflow and access your checklist. They can also download the app on their device and log in with their email address.

Step 4. Conduct the performance review and provide feedback

Now that you've created and shared your checklist, you're ready to conduct the performance review and provide feedback to your employee. You can use Workflow as a tool to guide your conversation and record your feedback.

To do this, open your checklist in Workflow and go through each task with your employee. You can mark each task as completed when you've discussed it. You can also add notes to each task to document your feedback. For example:

Task name: Review goal achievement

Notes: Employee exceeded expectations on sales target by 15%. Demonstrated excellent customer service skills and received positive feedback from clients.

You can send messages, files, images, or emojis to share additional feedback or appreciation. To access the chat feature, tap on the "Chat" icon at the bottom left corner of the screen.

Step 5. Review and update your checklist

That's it! You've just created a performance review checklist using Workflow. Now you can use it as a guide for preparing yourself and your team for any scenario. You can also share it with others by tapping on the share icon at the top right corner of your checklist screen. You can send it via email, text message, social media, or any other app you prefer.
